About Altadena Land Initiatives

Why ALI Was Founded

After the January 2025 Eaton Fire in Altadena, many homeowners discovered that insurance coverage (if any) or other sources of financial support fell far short of the true cost to rebuild. Without affordable financing options, or the ability to take on additional debt, families faced displacement, forced sales, or the permanent loss of generational homes.

Altadena Land Initiatives was formed in 2025 by founders Manny Abascal and Ursula Hyman in direct response to this crisis. The organization received its 501(c)(3) determination from the Internal Revenue Service in October 2025 and operates under formal board governance with established financial oversight and responsible stewardship of program capital. Drawing on decades of housing and recovery experience, community development expertise, and nonprofit leadership, ALI developed a practical, community-centered financing solution that enables homeowners to rebuild without being burdened by traditional loan structures that do not align with the realities of post-disaster recovery. ALI funds zero-interest gap loans issued through a designated lending partner.
